1A. The Hammermill in Sierra Leone - Maforay N'Jala
The Hammermill in Maforay N'Jala Village, Northern Province of Sierra Leone grinding cassava.
I've just returned home from Sierra Leone, and am very excited about the Hammermill. I am attaching pictures of the villagers processing cassava while I was there. I talked with the chief and others involved with the processor while I was in the village. They are very hopeful this will be their main resource toward becoming self-sufficient. In their particular part of the country, there is no cassava processing, and they have to travel many miles to Bo to purchase garee, which is a byproduct of cassava. The Hammermill, to their amazement, makes the cassava into a very smooth, almost mashed potato quality texture, which is considered to be garee. The tub that they ground for me took between 3 and 4 minutes to fill. We had talked about their 5-10 acre plot of cassava that is already planted, and realized that it is not nearly enough to keep pace with the machine. They have allready planted an additional 10 acres. While I was there, I pushed the machine very hard to see how it would handle that kind of use. The only problem we had was a little wear on the belt, and I think that was due to the belt not being tight enough. They have trained two young men, who have taken on the responsibility of running, cleaning, and maintaining the machine. They had gone over your manual with me, and understand it very well. We are off to an excellent beginning for the village of Maforay!!
